Senior Fire Origin & Cause Investigator
Bill A. Murphy, CFEI, CFII, CVFI, began his career with the Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency in 1986 where he stayed until 2010. He began his time as a firefighter, but quickly took on responsibilities of a fire instructor where he taught career and volunteer firefighters fire science and behavior, fire suppression along with many other techniques.
From here Bill moved onto become the Divisional Chief of Training where he managed eleven career fire service instructors, developed and oversaw training programs that were delivered to approximately 1200 firefighters.
Later in his career with Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency Bill became a full time fire investigator. He was responsible for all residential, commercial, marine and vehicle fire investigations within the Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM). In this position he was also responsible for the delivery of fire investigation training programs for career and volunteer firefighters.
From 1998 - 2000 Bill assisted the Office of the Fire Marshal with fire investigation training programs. In this position he instructed the Fire Science and Fire Behavior components.
In 2001 Bill was employed by the HRM to be the Dangerous and Unsightly Premises Administrator, Display Fireworks Inspector, Pyrotechnics Inspector as well as the Fire Service Representative on the Capitol District Task Force. Bill remained with the HRM until 2010 when he also left Halifax Fire and Emergency to join the Contrast Engineering Limited (CEL) team.
Bill joined CEL in June 2010 and is responsible for the investigations of fire and explosion scenes within Atlantic Canada. He is also responsible for the development and delivery of fire investigation programs. As of April 2021 Bill has conducted over 1500 fire origin and cause investigations and is a well-respected fire investigator throughout Atlantic Canada.
Bill lives in Halifax with his wife Michelle and their three dogs. In his free time Bill enjoys spending time with his children and grandchildren. In the warmer months you can find Bill on a shoreline with a fishing rod.
